As home of the 3rd largest banking center in the nation, the Carolina region has the opportunity to significantly benefit from this growth with a proactive strategy to attract and retain its most fundamental building block – new market talent.
What’s Unique About Our Approach?
Aside from being focused on the Fintech ecosystem of North and South Carolina, the CFH is focusing its programming and investments at the intersection of Fintech and incumbent financial institutions. With tens of thousands of startups and new workforce entrants deciding where they should put down roots, the CFH will make the case that choosing the Carolinas not only means there will be a complete support ecosystem at their disposal, but also the ability to partner with incumbent financial institutions – increasing their odds of success dramatically.
CFO, Ally Invest; CFH Board Member
Tom Desmond is the Chief Financial Officer of Ally Invest, an online securities broker and wealth management company and subsidiary of Ally Financial Inc. (“Ally”). Prior to Ally Invest, he was a co-founder and CFO of TradeKing Group, Inc., which was acquired by Ally in June 2016 for $298 million. Before TradeKing, Tom was a co-founder, partner and managing director of Baird Venture Partners, LLC, a venture capital firm based in Chicago, IL. Tom earned an M.B.A. with distinction from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, an M.A. with high honors from Michigan State University and a B.A., cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame.

Dave Matthews is the Technology Executive for Enterprise Technology Architecture & Shared Capabilities (ETASC) organization. He also leads the execution of the Solutions Delivery Management (SDM) program. Previously, he was the CTO/CIO for Travelocity.com. Prior to his time at Travelocity.com, Dave served as Head of American Express BSDC technology group, based in Canada. Before joining American Express, he spent 18 years at JP Morgan (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.) in London and the U.S. in various technology positions including Senior Technology Managing Director and Head of Technology.
SVP, BB&T; CFH Board Member
Mr. Ribbens has 17 years of experience in financial services and leads BB&Ts efforts around fintech partnerships, innovation supporting digital transformation and competitive intelligence. He is the Vice-Chairman of the ABA Payments Systems Administrative Committee and a member of the Federal Reserve Faster Payments Taskforce. Before joining BB&T, Mr. Ribbens spent nearly eight years as a payments Practice Expert with McKinsey & Company. Mr. Ribbens spent four years at the CEB, now a part of Gartner, in their Financial Services Practices and two years with Bank One, now JPMorgan Chase, in retail banking.
Principal, EY; CFH Board Member
Brad is a Principal in EY’s Financial Services Digital practice where he oversees a team of user experience designers, visual designers, product managers, and digital strategists. Brad has over twenty years of experience, split between consulting, technical product development, business development, innovation, and business and technology leadership. Brad focuses primarily on consumer banking channels and is a big proponent of combining the best of what Banks and Fintechs have to offer in order to elevate the ease and effectiveness of banking.
Spokesman, Carolina Fintech Hub
Tariq has spent his career at the intersection of financial and technology industries, and is a passionate evangelist for rising tide of FinTech disruption. Prior to serving as the Executive Director of the Carolina Fintech Hub and launching his own startup, Tariq served as the Head of Innovation and Investment for FIS Global, a $9B+ fintech company. Tariq has built profitable businesses from scratch, designed and implemented global risk and cybersecurity programs, launched FinTech Accelerator programs, and completed over a dozen acquisitions. He has also held executive positions in Fortune 500 companies such as GE Capital, Wells Fargo and Wachovia.
CTO, Levvel; CFH Operating Committee
Chris is the CTO & co-founder of Levvel, a consulting firm headquartered in Charlotte that helps businesses transform using technology. He has nearly 20 years of technology leadership experience having worked at multiple financial services institutions and early-stage startups. Prior to starting Levvel, he spent eight years at Bank of America leading technology projects in consumer banking and global wealth management.
Senior Director, Oracle; CFH Operating Committee
Aubrey is a Senior Director in Oracle’s Financial Services Global Business Unit focusing on Digital, Pricing and Billing solutions. He has over 20 years of experience working with global financial services companies including National Australia Bank, Suncorp Bank, Key Bank, Northern Trust, China Trust Commercial Bank, CIBC and many others. Previously he worked for IBM, Eontec and Siebel in various software development, project management, product management and marketing roles. He is also a member of the executive committee for Finsiders, a Fintech education organization. He is a member of the Computer Science and Engineering, Industry Advisory Board at the University of South Carolina.
Alexandra Villarreal O'Rourke
Partner, McGuireWoods; CFH Operating Committee
Alexandra is a partner with the law firm of McGuireWoods. Her practice focuses on FinTech advising, financial services litigation, and state and federal financial regulatory matters and investigations. She co-leads the firm’s FinTech industry group. Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Alexandra was Senior Counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Law & Policy in Washington, D.C. There, she advised Bureau officials on topics pertaining to FinTech and innovation, such as the use of alternative credit data and alternative underwriting models, marketplace lending, and online disclosures.

Matt is a VP at Bank of America responsible for Financial Center & ATM Innovation and Strategy. Matt previously worked for FIS Global where he was a founding member of the company’s Innovation & Investment Office responsible for FinTech start-up engagement and investment strategy. He started his career at GE Capital in their Leveraged Finance business based in NY and Chicago.

Rick Scot is a member of the Global Information Security (GIS) Cybersecurity Public Policy team. He is responsible for the team’s Financial Technology (FinTech) strategy, innovation and internal relationships within and outside of GIS. Prior to his role with the Cyber Public Policy team, Rick served as Program Manager for the Independent Assessment team, where he designed playbooks and remediation processes, along with creating a system of record and the Payment Card Industry (PCI) governance transformation. Before coming to GIS in 2016, Rick spent four years working on the home loans and servicing transformation leading the data, document and imaging work.

Patrick builds and strengths partnerships for MEDICI, FinTech’s Global Knowledge Network, powered by Let’s Talk Payments (LTP). Previously, Patrick was the Operations Lead for FIS Global’s Innovation + Investment office where he helped build a new technology business and shaped new programs to spur innovation within FIS’s Enterprise Product Office. Patrick is on the Executive Advisor Board for Innovate + Educate, a national non-profit creating solutions that build multiple, validated pathways from education to employment, thereby closing the skills gap and creating a new future of work.

Jon Wolf leads the Financial Center channel strategy at Bank of America. He is accountable for transformation and innovation as well as managing the new builds and renovation plans across the 4500 site network. Previously Jon has led Consumer Segment Strategy, Retail Payment Strategies, Enterprise Innovation, Consumer Real Estate Quality and Productivity and Enterprise Marketing Quality and Productivity. Before joining Bank of America in 2005, Jon spent 13 years at 3M Company in St. Paul, MN. There he led Enterprise Innovation capability, gaining Master Black Belt. Led Division marketing and North American brand management of Health and Safety Division.
