CFH October Meetup

Join Us For Our Monthly Carolina Fintech Hub Meet Up — In Person Or Virtually!

In addition to general updates and networking, we’re having a special presentation each month. This month…

Data Management and Governance — presented by Peter Carr, Partner at CapTech Consulting.

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is the first major data privacy initiative in the US to enhance the definition of a consumer’s personal information and provide new rights to consumers around this data.  The law will come into force on January 1, 2020.   Many organizations are taking a wait and see approach to this law, we will discuss some ways to prepare for this law at the 11thhour, and taking a risk-based approach to the challenge.  This presentation explains the background of the CCPA and the major elements that require compliance. The impact of Data Governance and Data Management is explained, together with the consequences of noncompliance.  Additionally, a brief comparison of European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and CCPA will be discussed.  Approaches to achieving compliance and/or minimizing risk are discussed in relation to the rights that consumers now have, as well as the new obligations placed on businesses. The impact on Data Governance as a coordinating function, and the need to bring together disparate parts of the enterprise to meet the CCPA challenge are emphasized.

Participants can expect to learn:

    – New consumer PI definition and rights delineated
    – The differences between the CCPA and the GDPR
    – How Data Governance can be setup to support CCPA
    – Risk-based approaches to comply with CCPA
